Providing Dance/Movement Therapy Supervision: Clinical, Ethical & Practical Application

Clinical supervision is an essential component of the progression of development for novice therapists, with researchers suggesting that supervision has become the primary means for ongoing counselor growth and development. In this 15-hour workshop, participants will learn about the history and evolving understanding of dance/movement therapy (DMT) specific supervision, emerging with the ability to define and describe the theoretical underpinnings of the practice. Akin to this, workshop participants will explore and engage in and with the techniques and practices commonly utilized in DMT specific supervision. Additionally, they will be able to articulate supervisee learning outcomes unique to this modality. While developing their knowledge of theory, practice, and application, participants will also evaluate the ethical imperatives and special considerations in DMT supervision. Participants will leave with a robust understanding of this unique approach, empowered to support others through further engagement with and application of embodied, experiential supervision.

The course is taught in an online synchronous format, and participants are expected to attend all 15 hours with their video camera on in order to receive course credit. Classroom learning will be a mixture of didactic presentations, experiential movement, class discussion, small group breakout rooms, and case studies. Students will be expected to engage thoughtfully and thoroughly in both large and small group learning environments.

Course participants will earn 15 CE credits (NBCC approval no. SP-4750) at the completion of the three day training, 12 hours general/supervision and 3 hours of ethics.

Objectives:

1.     Participants will describe dance/movement therapy supervision, comparing and contrasting it to clinical supervision in other allied health professions.

2.     Participants will explore and implement the various techniques and practices common to dance/movement therapy supervision.

3.     Participants will identify key evaluative processes and learning outcomes for professionals engaging in dance/movement therapy specific supervision.

Registrant qualifications:

Clinical competency is dependent upon the integration of knowledge, skills, and professional experiences. With an understanding that licensure and certifications vary due to a myriad of reasons, this course is best suited for dance/movement therapy professionals who have been deeply engaged with this work and who are prepared to take their practice to new depths as supervisors and/or mentors in the field. It is the expectation of the facilitator that all attendees will be well-versed in dance/movement therapy theory and practice, and that the group will be building together from this depth of knowledge in order to foster a fulfilling and expansive training opportunity for all participants. If you have specific concerns about meeting these qualifications, please reach out to me for a conversation.

Fee structure:

This course will be offered with a self-selected tiered pricing model. My hope is that high quality DMT specific supervision will become more and more widely accessible to our community, and in order to help make that a reality, I believe that supervision training must also be made available and accessible. I am trusting you will choose the tier that best meets you where you are at professionally and that will simultaneously support my work and the work of your future supervisees.

Tier 1: True Rate $350

This rate reflects the true, unsubsidized cost of participating in this training, and breaks down to approximately $23 per credit hour. Please consider choosing this rate if it won’t create financial hardship for you, and/or if your employer will be supporting you to attend this training.

Tier 2: Helper Rate $300

This rate reflects a reduced rate for helpers, which we all are in this profession, and breaks down to $20 per credit hour. Please consider choosing this rate if you desire to support others in their ongoing clinical growth, and yet find yourself in a professional stage where you also still need some support to help achieve these goals.

Tier 3: Accessibility Rate $250

This rate breaks down to just under $17 per credit hour, and is intended to support emerging supervisors who identify for any reason as needing the accessibility rate option. I hope to be able to leverage my own privilege in order to foster opportunities for representation within the field of DMT supervision. If this applies to you – consider selecting this tier.
